Martyn Disney left Kingston Park on a spinal board after being being rendered unconscious by a spot of joviality gone wrong
It is the classic stag-do tale. The groom-to-be, surname of Disney, is dressed as Princess Jasmine and is looking forward to a day and night out on the Toon with 12 of his pals.
What was less than typical was the incident that led to 44-year-old builder Martyn Disney being “knocked out” on Newcastle Falcons’ pitch at half-time of their game against Leicester on Saturday.
As part of the day’s activities, Disney – a Leicester season-ticket holder – alongside best man Sam Myring and 10 other accomplices, attended the Tigers’ convincing victory over Newcastle. But proceedings took a bonkers turn after an on-field clash during a half-time race that led Newcastle to release a post-match statement regarding his well-being.
“Newcastle Falcons are glad to report that the Leicester supporter who received medical attention during today’s game has been given the all-clear and been released from hospital,” it read.
“Having visited Newcastle for his stag-do and been tackled by his best man following the Falcons Flyer half-time race, he was given the best medical care possible and taken to hospital.
“We are happy to report he has had a scan and been given a clean bill of health.”
Having tracked down Disney, Telegraph Sport is able to outline the exact details of what happened during the Falcons Flyer race and how the builder became a local celebrity of sorts on a mad Saturday night in Newcastle.
Myring, 36, had signed Disney up to take part in the half-time race at Kingston Park, which involved the groom-to-be racing the entire length of the pitch. After a few beers, Myring decided it would be funny to prevent the stag from reaching the tryline at the other end of the pitch – so he rugby-tackled him.
The collision caught Disney off guard and he hit the 4G pitch like a sack of spuds, knocking himself out in the process. Cue paramedics, an ambulance and an awful lot of grovelling to fiancée Michelle – just one week out from their wedding day.
“I was a bit pie-eyed, on a 4G pitch, and Sam tackled me good and proper,” Disney tells Telegraph Sport. “I didn’t put my arm out, and I was immediately knocked out. All I can remember is eating pie and chips before the match and then waking up on a spinal board in an ambulance.
“I was in and out of consciousness. I went to A&E and had a CT scan. Sam had his tail between his legs, having to make a few awkward phone calls. He called my missus and said he thought he’d killed me.
“I’m not going to lie, Michelle was a bit worried at the time, but now she can see the funny side of it. She had already been having kittens about us going the week before the wedding. Sam said the phone call was very, very awkward. But of course he’s still the best man!
“It was just a bit of fun, wasn’t it. He obviously had no intention of KO’ing me. He thought it would be funny – he’s had a few beers himself – and he’s just thought, ‘I’m not letting him reach the line, I’m going to tackle him.’”
But nothing could keep a good stag down. Newcastle added in their statement that Disney was “now back in his hotel with the stag party” and that the wedding would be “going ahead as planned”, but only one of those statements was true.
“When I got the all-clear, the doctor said I had to go back to my hotel room etc, but I walked round Newcastle from the hospital and it was like I was a local celebrity!” Disney adds. “People were asking for selfies! It was ridiculous. We went into Cosy Joe’s [a bar in Newcastle] and the place erupted as soon as I walked in the door.
“And, of course, I got back on the beers. Newcastle released a statement saying I’d been told to go back to the hotel and take it easy and then a bloke called Declan replied to their post with a picture of me with a pint in my hand, having a selfie, saying how I definitely wasn’t in my hotel room.”
Having returned to work on Monday, Disney will marry Michelle this Saturday, missing Leicester’s tussle with Northampton in the process. If last weekend was anything to go by, however, that might be for the best. Even with the East Midlands derby taking centre stage, Myring’s speech will still be the hottest ticket in town.
